Dear Editor:

Re: Coal Revival: From living on borrowed time to once again having a future: United Mine Workers of America

I am proud of my time working at Crown Investment Corporation of Saskatchewan, where I had the opportunity to meet with the United Mine Workers of America and see first hand the real-world consequences of the Canadian federal government’s “just transition” policies.

Energy policy is not abstract. It impacts communities, jobs, and families. It can make or break economies. It matters, and efforts by those sitting in faraway locations often fail to see that.

For example, when the deadline for “retraining funds” is offered nearly a decade before site and mine closure, that is not only ineffective, but also incredibly dismissive of real world and economic realities. Even the term “retraining,” disregards decades of skilled, meaningful labor, and fails to recognize the dignity and identity that comes from these types of jobs.

With advancements in both coal fired power generation and carbon capture technology (which the University of Wyoming Centre for Carbon Capture and Conversion is a leader in), there is good reason for optimism in the sector and its future. Both in terms of the macro (cheaper, more prevalent energy), but also the real world impact that it can have on communities, and the individuals who help heat our homes and keep our lights on.

Credit to Jeremy Harrison and the Government of Saskatchewan for leadership on this file, and all those behind the scenes who made it happen.
