On New Year’s Eve, Jon Hromek announced his resignation as leader of the Saskatchewan United Party. He originally ran for the party in a byelection in August 2023 in the riding of Lumsden-Morse, but lost. He became leader of the party last spring after the founding leader, Nadine Wilson, stepped down. The Saskatchewan United Party failed to elect any of its candidates in the October general election, and Hromek, himself, was not successful in his own riding either.
As former CEO of two oil companies, Hromek’s stance on energy was one of his strengths. He says that CO2 is not a pollutant, and that Saskatchewan should burn coal for power generation until we run out of it.
He sold Adonai Resources II last spring to make the full-time leap into politics. That included a sizeable donation to the Saskatchewan United Party around that time.
Here’s the post he put on X on Dec. 31:
“Today I announced my resignation as leader of Sask United. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who believed in our vision, who supported our campaign, and who fought for the future of Saskatchewan alongside me. Even though my journey ends as leader of SUP, the fight for Saskatchewan and the great people who call it home will continue…”

And here is the full text of his resignation letter, as provided by email:
Friends,
I feel a profound sense of gratitude and humility for the journey we have shared together. On October 28th, we faced a challenging election, and while we did not win any seats, placing third in the province overall reflects a growing desire for change among the people of Saskatchewan.
Today, I am announcing my resignation as the leader of the Sask United Party and my decision to step away from the party altogether. This decision was not made lightly. I have spent countless hours listening to you—at town halls, on doorsteps, and in the streets. Your voices, your stories, and your hopes for our province have inspired me deeply. It has been an honor to stand alongside you in the fight for a better Saskatchewan.
Our province is at a crossroads. With new leadership in the United States and chaos in Ottawa, we must recognize the importance of strong leadership here at home. The decisions made in the coming years will shape not only our province but our place in the nation. It’s essential that we have leaders who prioritize the needs of Saskatchewan citizens and who are committed to fostering growth, prosperity, and resilience.
Throughout this campaign, I heard you loud and clear. You care about the future of Saskatchewan.
We share the belief in the immense potential of our great province, full of resources like oil, gas, rare minerals, helium, and more. We must protect and ensure they benefit all Saskatchewan people.
We agree that our leaders need to take a serious look at the PST and Gas Tax to offer real tax cuts that can alleviate the burden on the citizens.
We are committed to pushing for greater autonomy for Saskatchewan, taking control of what we can manage ourselves. It is time to flex our muscles in Confederation and prioritize Saskatchewan-first policies, while also fostering regional partnerships with our western allies.
While I may be stepping down as your leader, I want to emphasize that the future of this province is in the hands of the people. It is you who will carry the torch for change. It is your passion, your dedication, and your vision that will guide Saskatchewan forward.
This is not the end, it is merely a new beginning. I am hopeful because I believe in the power of the Saskatchewan spirit. I believe in our ability to innovate, to collaborate, and to rise to any challenge. Together, we can build a province that reflects our values and aspirations.
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who believed in our vision, who supported our campaign, and who fought for the future of Saskatchewan alongside me. Your commitment to this cause has been truly inspiring, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as the leader of Sask United.
Let us continue to fight for the Saskatchewan we know is possible—a province of growth, prosperity, and opportunity. Thank you.
Jon
