Lithium in SK Part 1: As the race for lithium takes off, Saskatchewan is seeing the dawn of a new industry
If you’re reading this on your phone, tablet or laptop, it is being powered by a lithium battery. If you plan on ever owning an electric vehicle, it is almost certainly going to use a lithium battery, and a very large, heavy one at that. But actually, since it’s made of lithium, it will be lighter than any other battery commercially viable at this time.
And that’s why lithium is so important. And Saskatchewan is poised to play a major role.
This is going to be the most in-depth coverage regarding the development of Lithium in this province. There’s going to be well over a dozen stories. Once you’ve read them all, you’ll have a really good idea of just what exactly is going on in the race for lithium.

Just what does The Saskatchewan First Act do? We asked the minister behind it
“So let’s take let’s take the power thing first of all,” Eyre said, noting the proposed Clean Electricity Standard, if adopted in its current form, would mean no fossil fueled power generation in this province by 2035.
According to SaskPower’s Where Your Power Comes From website, on any given day, coal and natural gas combined provide 65 to 84 per cent of the power in Saskatchewan. On Nov. 6, it was 77 per cent.
Eyre said, “That’s a federal policy which we hope will never see the light of day, but which is moving along. We will freeze in the dark. And we know that. Saskatoon (is) powered by the Queen Elizabeth, a national gas-powered power station. The entire City of Saskatoon (would be) in huge trouble.”

Details on SaskPower’s proposed 100 megawatt solar facility at Estevan, plus a bonus up to 10 megawatt pilot project on mined land
ESTEVAN – SaskPower held a two day open-house regarding at proposed 100 megawatt solar facility on Oct-26-27 at the Estevan Legion Hall.
In actuality, it’s not just a single project of 100 megawatts, but two projects – a 100 megawatt solar facility and a secondary, up to 10 megawatt pilot project.

The rise, and perhaps fall, of fracking in southeast Saskatchewan? Crescent Point starts drilling Viewfield Bakken wells without fracking them
CALGARY – If you were to ask someone what two technologies resulted in Saskatchewan’s “Bakken Boom,” the answers would surely be horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracking. Occasionally more legs, but especially more frac stages, were key.
It now appears that Crescent Point Energy Corp., which, through dozens of acquisitions, consolidated most of the Viewfield Bakken, is experimenting with moving away from fracking in that play.

Prairie Lithium converts exploration permits to lithium leases, working on delineating resource in SE Sask
EMERALD PARK – When you’re first exploring for minerals in Saskatchewan, you take out an exploration permit on the lands you’re looking at. And when you’re serious about doing something with those lands, you convert those lands into leases. This is typically done by drilling a well.
But before you get into a major, multi-well drilling program, it’s important to delineate your resource, figuring out just how far out your resource extends. Is it a one-well wonder, or prolific?
These are all things Prairie Lithium Corporation is doing right now in the Torquay area, seeking to develop lithium from brines deep in Saskatchewan’s sedimentary geology.
