Moe draws the line in the dirt: “We will not attempt the impossible when it comes to power production”
“I want to be very clear about this in Saskatchewan, we will not attempt the impossible when it comes to power production. We’re not going to risk plunging our homes, our schools, our hospitals, our businesses, that are operating and creating wealth in our communities into a cold and dark evening because of the ideological winds up another level of government.”
Pandemic relief Accelerated Site Closure Program now concluded, and every dollar was spent cleaning up 8,800 wells and facilities
The onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic was shocking for many reasons, and to many industries. One of those initially hit hardest was oil and gas. While shutdowns affected everything from restaurants to retail stores, not many saw the price of their primary product go into negative territory, if only briefly. Oil did, in April, 2020.
For Saskatchewan, oil, the second-largest industry after agriculture, was in serious trouble. Enormous numbers people were being laid off in almost every oilfield-related company. Activity ground to a stop, as did revenue. Calls to the federal government for support were indeed answered, with $400 million from the Government of Canada to properly abandon and clean up inactive wells and flowlines. The program came to be known as the Accelerated Site Closure Program. It was administered by the Saskatchewan Research Council.
‘Why don’t you fight for what we have, and what works?’ SaskPower holds open house in Estevan on $1 billion interconnect with US, solar and nuclear
This story is long, but worth it, especially if your livelihood is impacted by coal mining or power generation. Pipeline Online goes deep into the weeds with SaskPower on its plans for a 650 megawatt interconnect with the US., solar, nuclear power, backup generation for days the sun doesn’t shin and the wind doesn’t blow, carbon capture plans (or lack thereof), and more. And some of the public’s reaction is pretty raw.
Lithium in SK, Part 17: Lithium prices have come down … to only US$70,000 a tonne. A decade ago, they were US$7,000
Let’s put this in perspective: Around 2012, I wrote my first story on lithium, and at the time the prices had recently tripled to around $7,000 a tonne. In the fall of 2021, when Prairie Lithium (which this week was acquired by Arizona Lithium) was drilling the first targeted lithium well in Saskatchewan, the price was $21,000 a tonne. By the next spring, it was $65,000 a tonne.
To provide the building blocks of 21st century technology, Saskatchewan releases Critical Mineral Strategy
Critical minerals, the crucial ingredients for everything from cellphones to electric vehicles, are all the rage right now. And in a global race, Saskatchewan is staking its claim, figuratively and literally, in the development of many of these critical minerals.
On Monday, March 27, the Government of Saskatchewan has launched Securing the Future: Saskatchewan’s Critical Minerals Strategy to drive growth and development of the sector in the province.
