Are the federal Clean Electricity Standards impossible to meet? We asked SaskPower

“The CER would require SaskPower to effectively rebuild our entire power system, through retiring the majority of our existing generating units and replacing them with new, ultra-low emitting units or non-emitting energy sources, while also growing the system to support expanding electricity needs that are expected to support growing demand for clean electricity for industrial needs, transportation, increased customer participation and other needs.”

OTTAWA – On July 19, Ottawa-based think tank Public Policy Forum released “Project of the Century: A Blueprint for Growing Canada’s Clean Electricity Supply – and Fast.” This 43 page report is the most comprehensive discussion of Canada’s “energy transition,” as envisioned by the Liberal federal government, Pipeline Online has come across. And if successful and prices hold, that could result in payout in less than a year and half once operations commence.

There’s been a lot of talk about “just transition,” “energy transition” and “coal transition,” but precious little action converting fossil fuel workers to new industries. Rod Cullen, a coal miner from Estevan, is bucking that trend and has launched a business to allow him to eventually “transition” away from his job operating dozers and draglines. He’s also the first currently employed coal miner to successfully secure coal transition funding to help launch a new venture.
