OXBOW – Nobel HSSE Management Ltd. of Oxbow, Regina and Saskatoon has been purchased by Brandon-based Elite Safety Services.

That company specializes in rescue, safety and medic services, while Nobel focused on leader in occupational health, WCB management, medical and safety services.

Nobel, itself, was an evolution from Safe-Tee Management several years ago. That was a strategic alliance that allowed the company to gain a footing in the Ontario mining market.

Shirley Galloway, owner of Nobel, said by phone on Dec. 1, “After 26 years, I have sold the business and we are retiring!”

The announcement was made on Nov. 30.

“I am retiring, and the entire kit and caboodle is gone!” she said, adding her husband Jim, who was also involved with the company, is retiring too. Their house is sold, as is the office in Oxbow.

“We have been in talks with them for quite a while. And we were attractive to them because they did not have an occupational health or medical division. And so, with the purchase of Nobel, they’re going to be expanding quite aggressively into those areas. And they didn’t have a presence really in Saskatchewan and they really, really wanted to move in that direction. So this kind of gave them that foot in the door. And they have, from what I gathered they have some pretty big plans.”

Galloway will still help out a bit on a consulting basis, as “chief nursing officer.”

“For instance, if they need that direction on setting up, let’s say, a medical clinic, or they need direction on a strategic bid for occupational health services, and as they transition more into that area, they have that background and my expertise to help them along with that. There is no set time with that. Just on an as-needed basis,” she said.

Nobel had expanded into Regina and Saskatoon in 2019, just prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. That was huge for them, as the company ended up being one of the private testing firms that responded to the tremendous demand for COVID testing. Even now, they’re still doing PCR testing for clients doing some international travel to nations that still require it.

Galloway noted that PCR testing has many uses, including influenza testing, animal and plant testing.

There are 15 people working with the company, mostly in Regina and Saskatoon. Regina has more nursing staff, who focus on occupational health areas. Saskatoon staff

Elite will move people into Oxbow to replace her and Jim, she noted.

Nobel had grown and evolved over the years beyond their staple of medic services. And even then, their medic services are now up north, not in the oilfield. “All of our MTC (mobile treatment centre) work is with mining companies – gold companies, potash, and uranium,” she said.

That pivot occurred as the oil downturn that started in late 2014 dramatically reduced activity in the oilpatch. But they still provide safety work for oilfield companies, some of whom have been clients for 25 years, she said.

Galloway noted they provide occupational health for several large companies based out of Calgary, Edmonton and Ontario. One has over 3,000 employees.

Elite

The addition of Nobel HSSE’S services to Elite enables the expansion of their scope in one platform, furthering Elite Safety’s mission to give clients an entire suite of services that can be accessed from one point of contact. This is effective December 15, 2022, Elite said in a release.

“Having the ability to access services from one service provider saves valuable time and money for our clients,” said the company directors Marc Watt and Darren Brick. “With our acquisition of Nobel HSSE, we can bring together occupational health, medical, rescue and safety under one company, giving ours and Nobel’s clients; past, present and future the ultimate in health and safety services.”

“By joining the Elite Safety team, our clients benefit from the leadership and expanded safety services from of one of the leading companies,” said Galloway.

“We have provided our clients with expert services by utilizing experienced professionals and certified individuals to augment our team,” said Galloway. “This is why Elite is the perfect fit. We are extremely confident that Marc, Darren and the entire team at Elite will make this transition seamless and look after our clients as we do.”

“Our core staff will be retained to ensure continuity and to keep things familiar with our clients. Ryan Galloway, NCSO, will be in Regina and Elle Moshenko will remain with the Occupational Health Services division.” said Galloway. “This was very important to me: that staff that has been with us for a long while is retained. Elite made that happen and our clients will definitely benefit.”

Elite said the acquisition of Nobel HSSE “cements Elite Safety Services as a major player in Western Canada and beyond for the provision of occupational health, medical, rescue, training and safety services.”
