Four long-time Saskatchewan Party MLAs announced on Feb. 6 they will not be seeking re-election in the 2024 provincial election. All are current cabinet ministers, and one of which ran for the leadership of the Saskatchewan Party when former Premier Brad Wall retired.

Humboldt MLA Donna Harpauer, Indian Head-Milestone MLA Don McMorris, Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA Dustin Duncan and Saskatoon Northwest MLA Gord Wyant will not be running again in 2024.

Harpauer and McMorris were first elected in 1999 and have been re-elected five times since then. Duncan was first elected in 2006 and has been re-elected four times. Wyant was first elected in 2010 and has been re-elected three times. All four have served for many years in cabinet in various significant portfolios, the press release noted.

Harpauer is Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance.

McMorris is Minister of Government Relations; Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety; Minister Responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs; and Minister Responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission; Minister Responsible for Workers’ Compensation Board.

Duncan is Minister of Crown Investments Corporation; Minister Responsible for all major Crown corporations, including SaskPower, SaskEnergy, SaskTel, SGI and SaskWater; Minister Responsible for the Public Service Commission, and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority. In this capacity he’s been dealing with one of the largest issues facing the province’s energy sector, specifically the rise of the “energy transition” away from fossil fuels and towards dramatic increases in electrification. That includes advancing SaskPower’s path to nuclear power generation.

Wyant is Minister of Advanced Education. He was one of the candidates seeking the Saskatchewan Party leadership in 2016.

“That’s over 80 years of combined political experience and service to the people of Saskatchewan and that’s not easy to replace,” said Premier Scott Moe in a press release. “But at the same time, every government and every party needs renewal, and I respect the decision that Donna, Don, Dustin and Gord all made – that it’s time for renewal in their constituencies and for a new chapter in each of their lives.

“I want to thank Donna, Don, Dustin and Gord for their service and commitment to their constituents and our province, for all their hard work and for their friendship.”

The Saskatchewan Party has nominated 37 candidates for the 2024 election, of which 30 are incumbent MLAs seeking re-election and seven are new candidates. The party currently has seven more nomination dates scheduled.

While there was no cabinet shuffle announced, it’s commonplace in Canadian politics that sitting ministers who will not be seeing re-election are shuffled out and new faces brought in who are expected to carry forward into the next election. That’s one of the reasons that it’s common for first ministers to call upon their cabinet members to provide ample notice if they intend on running in an upcoming election.

Saskatchewan’s next election is scheduled this fall, however, there is nothing stopping Premier Scott Moe from calling an election in the spring time, perhaps after presenting the 2024 provincial budget.

SaskPower and GE Hitachi advance small modular reactor plans, but won’t say how many, or how much they’ll cost just yet
