If you think it looks a lot like the Hibernia oil platform, that’s because it is.
Cenovus successfull achieved a major milestone on July 16 with its West White Rose project offshore Newfoundland, on the Grand Banks. It’s a project that was substantially delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is finally coming together.

Together at last!
It’s a first for offshore Newfoundland and Labrador, and a major milestone for our West White Rose project. The topsides arrived in the field today, carried by the Pioneering Spirit construction vessel, and the 23,000-tonne platform was placed on the concrete gravity structure. Assisted by calm seas and supported by years of planning by our project teams, the topsides were safely set down in two hours. Thank you to all those involved in ensuring this success!
Our focus now shifts to the final stages of the project: hook up and commissioning of the platform and the subsea tie-in work. First oil is expected in the second quarter of 2026.
In a May 8 press release, Cenovus president and CEO Jon McKenzie said, “Once the West White Rose project is operating, we’ll be adding around 45,000 bbls/d of light sweet oil production tied to global pricing, generating significant free cash flow.”
Cenovus is Saskatchewan’s largest oil producer, having purchased Husky several years ago.
It is currently trying to bring a blowout under control at its Rush Lake 2 thermal project, due east of Maidstone and near the crest of the North Saskatchewan River Valley. That blowout has been ongoing for several months.
