LLOYDMINSTER – With energy security on everyone’s mind over the last several weeks, Cenovus Energy is stepping up with a donation to Lakeland College to support hands-on learning in the energy sector.
Cenovus has announced a $2 million investment in Lakeland College in Lloydminster and Vermilion. In Lloydminster, these dollars will be used to support upgrades to the Cenovus Energy Production Lab and Cenovus Energy Power Engineering Lab. In Vermilion, the funding will help with the modernization of learner spaces in the School of Trades and Technology on the Vermilion campus.
The investment will also open new student pathways, establishing a dual credit energy course in Lakeland’s School of Energy and a dual credit electrical course in the School of Trades and Technology.
Adam Waterman, Chair of the Board of Governors, told a group of students and dignitaries how important that is to helping students.
“Dual Credit opportunities give high school students a head start, It allows them exposure to career paths and begin building the skills that they’ll carry into the future. It’s a powerful way to open doors earlier and to spark passion in a career path. With this investment those opportunities will expand with power engineering and the electrical trades where the demand for talent continues to grow”

Waterman said the impact extends beyond individual students especially in rural communities. “By strengthening these pathways we are not only supporting individual student success but also helping to build the workforce that drives our economy.”
Jeff Lawson, Executive Vice-President, Corporate Development and Chief Sustainability Officer with Cenovus Energy, announced the $2 million investment via video and shared his thoughts on how vital it is to support these trades.
“If I think of the oil and gas business and what it means to young people, it’s one of the few industries in this country where young people in Canada can get good paying jobs and will be able to afford a good life for their families.”
He also noted the world is turning toward responsible energy.
“Both the Alberta and Saskatchewan governments want to increase oil production in the provinces, this will drive the economies in both provinces but it’s a challenge.
“We need people, we need you, costs keep climbing so we need you, young brains to keep innovating to do things better and cheaper”.
Lawson was unable to attend in person because of bad weather, and in his video message he noted that Cenovus Energy employs over 1,300 staff in the area and many are Lakeland College alumni.
One of those alumni is 2025 graduate Kate Svidrak, a current employee at Cenovus Energy, who spoke about the impact of hands-on learning.
“It created and environment where students like me can learn by doing, doing mistakes safely and at the same time truly understand how the industry works, long before setting foot on site.”

Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland College, also highlighted the importance of collaboration between industry and education.
“Our partnership helps to keep programs relevant, create clear pathways from classrooms to careers.
“It means more than labs and new programs. It’s about ensuring our students have the spaces to collaborate. Build foundational skills and grow their expertise so they can put their education into action and graduate ready to lead and innovate in a vital industry like energy.”
She added that the partnership reflects a shared vision for the future workforce. “Their (Cenovus Energy) commitments reflect a shared belief in the value of hands on education and its impact in the workforce.
“Today is a celebration of a shared commitment to students, to industry and to the future, Thank you Cenovus.”
In honour of the donation, the Applied Engineering building at the Vermilion campus will now be renamed the Cenovus Energy Industrial Trades Building.
With the continuing conflict in the Middle East and the ongoing disruption to global oil supplies, investments like this are taking on even greater importance.
