MONTREAL, SASKATOON – Bronwyn Eyre, former Saskatchewan Minister of Justice and Attorney General, as well as Minister of Energy and Resources has joined thinktank MEI (formerly known as the Montreal Economic Institute).
Eyre is co-host of the Pipeline Online Podcast and a regular columnist for Pipeline Online.
“The MEI is pleased to announce that former Saskatchewan minister Bronwyn Eyre is joining the organization as a Senior Fellow. Ms. Eyre will take part in specific projects, in particular on files related to energy and natural resources, as well as federal-provincial relations,” MEI said in a July 8 news release.
“We’re thrilled to have Bronwyn Eyre bring her regional and subject-matter expertise to our roster of prestigious Senior Fellows,” said Daniel Dufort, president and CEO of the MEI. “Her knowledge of energy policy and the regional realities of the Prairies make her an invaluable contributor to our pan-Canadian research work.”

Eyre served eight years as minister in the Government of Saskatchewan, overseeing various portfolios including Education, Energy and Resources, and Justice. Eyre was instrumental in bringing in the Saskatchewan First Act, which reasserted Saskatchewan’s constitutional rights over resources and in particular, electrical power generation. That act was key to the provincial government’s recent announcement that it would be reviving its coal-fired power generation, instead of shutting it down by 2030, as per federal regulations. Prior to her stint at Justice, she was Minister of Energy and Resources for four years.
Prior to her political career, Eyre was a radio broadcaster, columnist, and university lecturer. She attended McGill University and the University of Saskatchewan, from which she holds a Law degree. She also speaks French, German and Italian.
“I’ve long admired the MEI’s commitment to rigorous and accessible research, as well as the growing niche it has carved for itself in our national debates,” said Eyre. “The MEI understands the role that energy and natural resources play in our shared prosperity and has long been a committed voice that pushes back against federal encroachment in areas of provincial responsibility.”
The MEI is an independent public policy think tank established in 1998, with offices in Montreal, Calgary, and Ottawa. Through its publications, media appearances, and advisory services to policymakers, the MEI stimulates public policy debate and reforms based on sound economics and entrepreneurship, the organization said in its release.
“Quebecers and Westerners share a healthy skepticism about centralizing policies that come out of Ottawa,” added Dufort. “Bronwyn’s voice will help us better connect with Western Canadians who feel increasingly overlooked in national policy conversations.”
