Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, right, arrives for the cabinet swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christinne Muschi

It took me a little while to get over the results of the Canadian election on April 28. I was really hoping for change, and so many of us were very disappointed by the results. To watch Trudeau, step down (removed?) and then run away from the Trump regime was frustrating. Then we watched as a globalist multi-millionaire was anointed as the leader of the Liberal party, and then somehow used fear to win an election, which robbed Canadians of the opportunity for positive change. Are Conservatives angry? Damn right we are. I was at the Williston Basin Conference the very next morning where Premiere Scott Moe gave the opening remarks. He ended by saying a quote he attributed to former Prime Minster Jean Cretien (a Liberal) and said, “You can’t be angry and smart at the same time.” That stuck with me and resonated with the entire room. Being angry for a short time is okay, but it isn’t helpful when you are trying to make good decisions. On a side note, the Williston Basin Conference was a great opportunity to network and learn, thanks to the organizers and all who attended. There were a lot of great industry people there.

I enjoy a wee nip of the Scotch on occasion. Mostly I enjoy it in the company of good friends, but often after an election. There are a few brands I prefer over others, but they are all single malt. Some are smooth and have a little heat, and some are peaty and not so easy to swallow, especially if you don’t care for Scotch.

What isn’t so easy to swallow is four more years of incompetent Liberal policies and overreach. (Notice how I didn’t say corrupt? It does go without saying though.) The media and the Liberal Party have gone far out of their way to present Pierre Poilievre as a terrible, heartless Conservative. If you have ever met him, he is a genuine, decent family man of principle and good morals. (I have had the good fortune to have had three conversations with him) Despite his election talk of energy corridors and pipelines to the west, I am not convinced. Mr. Carney’s writings and past speeches indicate that his vision of the future does not include oil and gas. This is the most concerning part for those of us in the industry.

One of the many things I love about my grandson Jake is when he explains his latest Lego creation. He points to each part of it and then follows with, “And guess what?” And that’s what I want to tell you all right now. “Guess what?” The sun will rise tomorrow and we will have the opportunity to continue to fight and represent what is best for Canada. I’m not gonna blow sunshine up your ass, the next few years are not going to be easy. If fact they may be very, very difficult. What will this bring? An early election triggered by a minority government? More dialogue concerning Alberta or western separation? The 51st state? Time will tell.

What we will need to do is hold the Liberal minority government to account. Every. Damn. Day. Carney promises Energy East? Remind him daily, hourly if need be. But the question on every Westerner’s mind is of course, will he follow through? Maybe he will. Perhaps he will be the Liberal who saves Canada and our economy will thrive. On the other side, why would a man who has made billions of dollars outside of Canada for his company (Intentionally avoiding our country) want to be the Prime Minister? I personally don’t trust him.

The Liberal Party of Canada may be a lot of things, but they truly are the masters of Canadian politics. They know how to get their political shit done. While we Conservatives fight amongst ourselves about the direction we should take, the Liberals will typically tow the party line. Conservatives, in my opinion are more open to suggestion and debate, whereas the left will cancel such discussion and push for a united front. This is a double-edge sword for us right-leaning people. The lesson for Canadian conservatives is to learn how to work together and continue to spread our message of sound economic policy, reduced debt loads, less red tape and smaller government.

Back to Scott Moe’s quote from earlier. I will paraphrase a bit and say it’s ok to be angry. It’s ok to be sad. It’s ok to be disappointed. There is a large number of us who are. But we are a large group of people that genuinely care about our industry, this great nation, each other and want to preserve it in the best way possible for our children and grandchildren. But just remember you are not alone. So, lets take this time to be angry sad and disappointed and do it together, as a family. This too shall pass. As grandson Jake says, “and guess what?” A new day begins and we will continue to share our message of prosperity, hope and positive change for all. We are never out of the fight. We will not let the fear of an American president halt our opportunities. We will not let our own destructive government policy prevent Canada’s success. We will persevere and succeed.

Brian Crossman is a partner at Independent Well Servicing in Estevan. He thinks we should all be ready for another election in the next two years. (Fingers crossed) And crude oil prices never stay low forever.
