While there are several unions involved with producing power in Saskatchewan, there are two in particular at the forefront when it comes to coal-fired power generation – International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2067 and United Mine Workers of America Local 7606.

UMWA represents the mine workers at the Westmoreland Estevan Mine. IBEW represents most of the power workers at the Shand, Boundary Dam and Poplar River Power Stations. As the Westmoreland Poplar River Mine was originally owned and operated by SaskPower (three guesses why the draglines are painted orange) the miners at the Poplar River Mine at Coronach are also IBEW workers. Additional unions represent various trades during maintenance and overhauls, from boilermakers to operating engineers and more.

UMWA and IBEW in particular also the ones whose livelihoods and mortgages are at threat by the continuing legal battle to end the operation of coal-fired power generation in this province. The appeal of the tossing of the attempted injunction takes place in Saskatoon on Sept. 15, Both those unions have been granted intervenor status and will be providing the court their own perspeoct. and Pipeline Online will be there and report on it when able (the Lloydminste Heavy Oil Show kicks off that evening, so it may take some time to get caught up.)

So while you might be pulling in the dock at the cabin today, or recovering from last night’s football game, some of these folks are and were on the job, keeping the power flowing. Here’s some short videos showing just a bit of what they do to keep our lights on, hot or cold, 24 hours a day, 365 day a year:
