ESTEVAN – The Estevan Oilfield Technical Society Bonspiel is taking place March 24-25 at the Power Dodge Curling Centre. And as of last week, there were still slots open for teams to take part in the 24-team event.

Registration for the 64th Annual Open Bonspiel can be done online at estevanots.com/curling.

Team entry fee is $360.00 per rink of four curlers. Buffet tickets included. Additional buffet tickets can be purchased for $40 per ticket, based on availability. To enter as an individual or pair, please contact info@estevanots.com.

“It’s a two-day event. Twenty-four works perfect,” said Tony Sernick, one of the organizers with OTS.

“Last year we had 24 times. The good thing that we noticed last year is there seems to be more youth and younger guys in the workforce. They definitely showed up for the curling event, which was a good sign, for sure.”

This is a co-ed closed event for people who currently or previously worked in the oil and gas industry. Details on criteria can be found here. But they’re not too picky about that. “Even if you can’t find oilfield people, if you support oil and gas, com on out and put a team in. It all benefits the curing arena and town,” Sernick said.

Friday night will see the supper at the curling rink.

The bonspiel is the first of four events planned by the OTS. Next after that is the Top Gun Trap Shoot, to be held Friday, May 12. It will take place at the Estevan Wildlife Federation trap shooting site at Boundary Dam, part of Woodlawn Regional Park.

Sernick called it “a little hidden gem that Estevan has.”

“This is the third annual trap shoot,” Sernick said, noting it started during the COVID years. As an outdoor event, it went over well. “In the last two years, we’ve had plus or minus 120 participants, so it’s definitely a full day of shooting.

“They show up, but it’s kind of like a tee time for golf,” he explained. “You have a certain time you show up, and you come out and blast 100 shells. And then after you’re done that, come on in for some refreshments and there’ll be a meal provided all day for the participants.

“You don’t need anything. You just show up the guns and bullets and all the safety gear is provided,” he said. “You can bring your own gun, too, but the shells will be provided.”

Next after that is the June 2-4 66th Annual Oilmens Golf Tournament, at Woodlawn Golf Course. “It’s either an 18 hole or 36 hole event, whichever you choose,” he said. “Saturday night is supper at the curling rink.”

There’s a change this year in that there will not be lobster served, as the price of lobster has soared beyond being economical. But they will be serving steak. Prizes will be handed out, and the champion will be awarded Sunday afternoon.

“It’s definitely our biggest event. Last year I think it was like 250 participants,” he said.

To play 18 holes its $160, and 36 holes is $200.

The fourth event is another golf tournament, a mixed two-person scramble to be held at the Hidden Valley Golf Course on Saturday, July 8. This is the second year for the event.

“Last year it went over well for our first time. We had like 70 participants out of a maximum of 90.”
