Reg Greenslade

For outstanding contributions to the petroleum industry in Saskatchewan and Canada, Reg Greenslade is inducted into the Saskatchewan Petroleum Industry Hall of Fame. You can attend the awards ceremony on June 1 at the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show. Tickets are available at oilshow.ca.

Reg grew up in Shaunavon. His father ran Greenslade’s Welding and Construction, which worked in the oilfield. It was general oilfield services and pipelines, including building facilities. Reg grew up in the business, starting sweeping floors.

He worked for a local welder and soon found university was a good idea. “The winters kind of made you pay attention to what the alternative might be,” Reg said.

He went to Montana State University in Bozeman, originally with thoughts of aerospace engineering. That changed to a mechanical engineering degree with a minor in industrial and management engineering. He graduated engineering in 1989.

He worked his summers with SaskOil in the Bone Creek field, north of Shaunavon. Upon obtaining an engineering degree he joined SaskOil in Regina, followed by a transfer to Kindersley and Lloydminster.

Reg found it to be a great opportunity, as SaskOil was in the process of privatizing and growing. While there, he worked with people who would later become prominent in Saskatchewan’s oilpatch – Scott Saxberg, Neil Roszell and Trent Yanko. “All these guys cut their teeth there, and it was a great training ground,” Reg said. He was given opportunities to work in production engineering, then reservoir engineering and project management. He also gained invaluable field experience in Coleville for a year and a half then a year at Lloydminster.

While there he applied and was accepted to get an MBA from Queens University. CS Resources approached him to work in Calgary, focused on heavy oil. He deferred his MBA for a year and then had an opportunity to run his first company, Big Horn Resources.

Reg Married Carrie Little from Medicine Hat in 1990 and has two daughters, Alexandra, 23 and Hannah, 21.

A mentor, Walter Dawson, originally from Shaunavon and a friend of his father, got him involved with an Alberta company called Bighorn Resources which had minimal production, some difficulty, but lots of opportunity. And Reg saw it as chance to start his own company, the entire purpose of the MBA.

“I never did get an MBA. I got it the hard way,” he said.

That was in 1995. They grew from six barrels a day to 20, then tripled it to 66. Eventually the company was producing 1,000 barrels per day and did a reverse takeover of Westlinks Resources in 2001.

Westlinks became Enterra Energy Corp. in late 2001, of which he was founder, chair, president and CEO. It was built to about 5,000 barrels per day through the drill bit. That became Enterra Energy Trust in 2003, where he remained chair.

Reg became chair, president and CEO of JED Oil Inc., a then private oil and gas development company, which worked in concert with Enterra.

JED subsequently completed an IPO and began trading on the American Stock Exchange. Reg served as chairman, president and CEO of JED until January 2005 at which time he returned to Enterra as interim president and CEO until June 2005. During Reg’s tenure, Enterra grew from a small entity to surpass the $1 billion mark in market capitalization and listed on the Toronto and New York Stock Exchanges. He remained chair Enterra Energy Trust, until March of 2006 and chair of JED until May of 2007.

He was a director of Tuscany International Drilling Inc., from 2007 to 2013, president of from 2010, and president and CEO from 2011 to 2013.

Reg was also a founder and director of Spartan Exploration Ltd., Spartan Oil Corporation, and Spartan Energy Corp. Spartan Energy had a large focus in southeast Saskatchewan, and was subsequently sold to Vermillion. He is currently a director of Spartan Delta Corp. Spartan Delta is now a 70,000 barrel per day company.

He was also the founder and chairman of JMG Exploration, Inc. and has served on Board of Governor’s for the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers as well as numerous private and public company boards.

He is currently a director of Andora Energy Corporation, Grandview Exploration Inc., New Wave Energy Services Ltd., Fountain Tire, Longshore Resources Ltd., Allied Energy Corp., Spartan Delta Corp. and Cleantek Industries Inc.
