Interesting energy-related videos show up on YouTube or other media platforms from time to time that are worth spending a few minutes checking out.
Rope and dope coating technique. And you thought smoking was bad for your health. APA
This video showed up on Facebook and it’s pretty surprising, actually. It apparently comes from 1976, and shows the first use of automated welding on a big inch pipeline in Australia. I didn’t realize that automated welding dated that far back.
The music is rather trippy. The colour is off. But it’s quite an interesting film.
Hardhats? What are those? Welders just hold their sugar scoop kinda-sorta in front of them as the automated welder progresses. Bare chests and backs are common. High viz? Forget about it! Zero rollover protection on the equipment.
You get to see the rope and dope method of wrapping pipe, too. Note it’s “coal tar enamel, about 400 degrees, then wrapped in fiberglass and asbestos felt.” That method of pipe protection is long gone, and rightfully so.
And as someone shows very first pipeline job was oiling on a wheel ditcher, I can tell you that is the most godforsaken piece of iron made. Mine took 10 tubes of grease per day, 200 shots per tube, by hand. There were no Milwaukee M18 grease guns back then.
As for the two miles of “chainage” or progress per day goal, when I was pipelining in the late 1990s, we were doing 4 and sometimes five kilometres per day in southern Saskatchewan. Two miles is 3.2 kilometres, for reference’ sake.
