The Saskatchewan NDP have been working for quite a while now on developing their power strategy, and in doing so, Aleana Young Shadow Minister of Economy, Jobs and SaskPower, spent a fair bit of time last year looking into nuclear power generation as well as the associated supply chain within Canada. That foundational work found its way into the Grid and Growth Plan 2026 the Saskatchewan NDP released this past spring.
Asked about the NDP’s response to the new National Nuclear Strategy announced on June 22, Young sent the following by email:
“For a long time, Saskatchewan has helped power the world. It’s good to see the federal government increasingly recognize that electricity — and nuclear energy in particular — are strategic national assets tied directly to Canada’s energy security, sovereignty, and economic future.
“While critical, Saskatchewan’s role in this conversation cannot begin and end at digging uranium out of the ground. We have a renewed opportunity to build our economy — from processing and engineering to manufacturing, research, and next-generation energy development. Carla Beck’s team has put forward a plan in Grid and Growth that will generate economic growth, while keeping rates low and affordable and that will set up Saskatchewan for a nuclear future. The Grid and Growth Plan also commits us to working with neighboring provinces, the federal government and first nations to achieve the best possible energy future for the province.”
