In one of the most famous advertisements in history, Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackelton ran this ad in London papers:
“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.”
Well, going to the far reaches of the earth is a lot safer now, and safe return is pretty much expected. StarLink also means global internet and communications is possible, and they’ll even have diesel-fueld equipment. These photos were taken on Stampede Drilling Rig 1 north of Kisbey on one of its first holes, way back in 2014. The temperature was colder than -40 C, with a wind chill of – 60 C. I remember clearly, because my nose was freezing to the back of my Nikon. That’ll be a warm day in Greenland during the winter, so keep that in mind.
