Remember Trudeau saying there was “no business case” for Canadian LNG exports from the East Coast? This is especially significant because Trudeau took then German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Newfoundland for a hydrogen deal. The scheme? Use massive onshore wind turbines on the southwest corner of Newfoundland to electrolyze fresh water collecting in an abandoned mine to convert it into hydrogen. But since there was only one very small ship on the entire planet capable of shipping liquified hydrogen at 20 degrees above absolute zero, that hydrogen would have to be converted into ammonia to be shipped to Germany, where, presumably, it would need to be converted again to hydrogen – each step requiring more energy. And that’s no joke. That was the real scheme.
So Scholz went to Qatar the next week and signed a multi-decade supply agreement with Qatar. The problem is, the Iran War has now led Qatar to shut down its massive LNG export facility, and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz means any Qatari LNG couldn’t get out anyhow without the threat of going boom along the way.
Was/is there a case for Canadian LNG?

In reposting Poilievre’s video, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said, “The best time to build a pipeline was ten years ago, the next best time is now. We must build new pipelines West, East, North and South –without delay, and without hesitation – to supply Asian and European markets with safe, reliable, and responsibly produced energy products.”
And on that topic, Conservative MP Michael Chong pointed out in the House of Commons on March 9, “It’s been 4 years since war began in Ukraine & 4 years since we called on the gov’t to expedite LNG exports. It’s been 8 months since Parliament gave gov’t new powers to expedite LNG projects. To date no new LNG projects. And now Iran war constraining LNG/oil supply.”
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hogson replied that the previous week, the federal government approved an oil project offshore Newfoundland, Baie d’Nord. But Chong noted that was oil, not LNG.
