He bided his time, and on Saturday, US President Donald Trump struck back at Canada for its perceived insolence and audacity of making a trade deal with China in mid-January.
In threatening 100 per cent tariffs “against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.,” Trump essentially threatened to all but shut down Canada-US trade. The implications as such would devastate the Canadian economy.
Trump posted the following on his Truth Social account on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 24:

If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a “Drop Off Port” for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

He was still thinking of it hours later, posting this at 10:36 a.m.:
The last thing the World needs is to have China take over Canada. It’s NOT going to happen, or even come close to happening! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J.TRUMP
These messages were repeated through other social media, such as the official White House X account @WhiteHouse
Notably, Trump referred to the prime minister as “Governor Carney,” a slight he had similarly aimed at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, especially with reference to making Canada the 51st state. This is a indication of a significant downturn in the relationship, as Trump had stopped making the governor reference after Carney took power as prime minister.
Earlier in the week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Carney had made a speech talking about the major changes in the global world order. He did this without specifically mentioning Trump, but his point was not lost on anyone. The next day, Trump made the following reference in his own speech, saying, “I watched your prime minister yesterday. He wasn’t so grateful — they should be grateful to the U.S., Canada. Canada lives because of the United States.
“Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
Apparently, Trump remembered.
Later the same morning, Carney posted this video on his social media channels, saying, “We’re buying Canadian, and we’re building Canadian.”

Additionally, the minister responsible for Canada-US trade posted the following:
“Statement from the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, Internal Trade and One Canadian Economy: “As the Prime Minister said this week, Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership in our economy and security — and we will remain focused on ensuring the future of that relationship will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of our border. There is no pursuit of a free trade deal with China. What was achieved was resolution on several important tariff issues. Canada’s new government is building a stronger Canadian economy, with a plan that is building our strength at home and strengthening our trading partnerships throughout the world.”
