Saskatchewan’s Crown power utility is now offering its own form of greenwashing program to its customers.

According to a Feb. 20 press release, verbatim:

SaskPower is now offering a Renewable Subscription Service for small and medium business, farm and residential customers who want to offset their greenhouse gas emissions from their power consumption with an option that is more flexible and affordable than self-generation.

This optional service offers customers the opportunity to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated from SaskPower’s renewable generating facilities, a service currently available to SaskPower’s largest industrial customers.

This allows customers to claim the emissions reduction benefits of renewable power generation without the cost of installing and maintaining their own generation equipment, like solar panels.

“We understand that self-generation isn’t an option for every customer who wants to offset their own emissions,” said Rhea Brown, Executive Vice President of Customer Experience & Procurement at SaskPower. “We are committed to empowering customers to manage their power use and emissions, and introducing the ability for these customers to purchase RECs is evidence of that.”

This service provides the flexibility for customers to choose from a number of options that works best for their power use and budget. They can offset all or some of their power consumption for a price of $0.015 per kilowatt-hour. A REC is an internationally recognized unit of measurement that represents the environmental attributes of 1 megawatt-hour of renewable energy. Customers who sign up for Renewable Subscription Service can change or cancel their subscription at any time.

For the record, electrons on the grid are agnostic as to whatever certificates may be assigned to them. If, as on Feb. 22, 24 per cent of power generated on the SaskPower grid comes from coal and 43 per cent comes from natural gas, any power consumed on the grid that day is of that ratio. And if the wind decides not to blow on a particular day, no amount of certificates will be able to make up for its absence.
