Brad Wall is former Premier of Saskatchewan
“Canada could be an energy superpower, given we are blessed with the world’s third largest reserves of uranium, third largest oil reserves, and massive natural gas deposits in the Montney, Duvernay, and Deep Basin areas.”
Good piece by Eric Nuttal. (found here at the Financial Post)
In June of 2016 I tried to make this same point on the need for Canada to be the energy superpower it can be at a speech to an Atlantic Energy Conference in New Brunswick. It was part of Saskatchewan’s efforts to fight for Energy East, a pipeline that could have helped diversify our export markets and remove the reliance eastern Canada has on foreign oil. During that trip we visited an offshore oil port and to help drive home the point as to just how disfunctional Canada has become – there was a ship from Saudi Arabia unloading its oil cargo for Canadian refineries.
On my way back home I stopped in Montreal to meet with then Quebec Liberal Premier Premier Couillard again to advocate for Energy East across and to ask for Quebec to support it. To his credit – he was very direct. His answer was no. He added that he could not see a day that Quebecers would ever approval a pipeline from the west – through their province.
Yesterday the current Premier of Quebec said basically the same thing. He was asked after the suspension of the Trump tariffs if now was the time to support an Energy East project and diversify Canada’s energy export market. He said no.
They say yes – of course – to their receiving about half of the federal $25 billion equalization program … supported indirectly by the Canadian oil and gas sector.
What a country.
Nuttal is right of course – we need to have leadership in this country that shares this vision that Canada can and should be a global energy superpower. But in order for that day to come – we first need leadership within Canada that supports the diversification of our energy exports and true energy independence for our country.
Editor’s note: The Energy East Pipeline was originally planned to be in service in December, 2018.
