Originally published Jan. 21. On Feb. 7, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Trump’s talk of absorbing Canada ‘is a real thing.”

Well, he’s president now, and planning on tariffing the hell out Canada on Feb. 1. This is part of Trump’s idea of applying economic pressure on Canada to eventually submit to his new idea of manifest destiny.

There are a few fundamental flaws with President-elect Donald Trump’s idea of Canada becoming the “51st state.”

First of all, it wouldn’t be just the 51st, but the 52nd, 53rd, 54th, 55th, 56th, 57th, 58th, 59th and 60th, respectively. And that’s not counting three territories.

In the US, electoral balance between the Republicans and Democrats is everything. Why hasn’t Puerto Rico become the 51st state already? Because it would almost certainly be a Democrat stronghold, forever. Puerto Rico has a larger population than 19, yes, 19 states. Why the hell hasn’t it been made a state yet?

Here’s why: If it did, it would likely have four House seats, not such a big deal, but more importantly, two Senate seats – all Democrat.

And the District of Columbia, a potential 52nd state, has a population greater than Vermont and Wyoming. D.C. votes almost universally Democrat, with 92.5 per cent voting for Harris over Trump.

So how could a union of Canada and the United States grant statehood to New Brunswick, or Saskatchewan, but not Puerto Rico? How about Prince Edward Island before D.C.? How do you deny 3.9 million existing American citizens statehood, but give it to a bunch of Canucks?

Republicans can’t fathom the idea of giving Puerto Rico and D.C. statehood, because that’s an automatic four Democrat senate seats, and likely another five in the House. And that’s another nine electoral college seats – all firmly painted blue.

So let’s add Canada to the mix. Seven of those 10 new states would almost certainly be Democrat bastions, forever. Alberta, Saskatchewan, and once in a while Ontario might vote Republican. The rest? They might vote Conservative as Canadians, but would surely be Democrats as Americans.

You add 10 Canadian states, Puerto Rico and DC, and you get 62 states, and nine or ten of the new 12 will all but certainly never vote Republican any time soon.

The net result of adding Canada alone means forever ensconcing the House, the Senate and the president as Democrat. Add in DC and Puerto Rico, and the Republicans will cement American as a one-party nation, under the Democrats, for generations.

And if you did add Canada as simply one state, with a population approximating California, it would likely get as many electoral college votes, too. That’s 54, which, as a Canadian block would certainly be Democrat, forever. Ask a Republican how much they’d like another California in the electoral mix?

Peaceful? Are you sure?

All of this assumes a peaceful union between the two nations. But there’s no guarantee of that. What happens if it’s an annexation, instead? Kind like a man with a moustache did to Austria in 1938?

You could end up with a guerilla war.

I’m not joking.

Some Canadians might not take too kindly to annexation. You take away socialized healthcare for some people’s children, their parents, or themselves, and look out. When their kid gets turned away from the emergency room because they don’t have health insurance, the idea of being American might not be so appealing.

Some of those might have worn their own uniform at one point, with a maple leaf on the shoulder. And enough of them hid their guns from the Liberals that you could expect some to take a potshot at Americans in uniform north of the 49th parallel.

If Iraqis and Afghanis could figure out how to make things that go boom, do you think Canadians can’t? And a huge portion of our military spent time over there. As the song Copperhead Road goes, “I learned a thing or two from Charlie, don’t you know?” Well, some Canadians might have learned something from Abdul.

If Winnipeg turns into Fallujah, will it have been worth it? If Americans start going home in bodybags because of this foolishness, how’s that going to go over with the American people? And who is to say any strife would stay north of the 49th?

In this remarkable interview with former Prime Minister Jean Cretien, he points out that Canadians, as Americans, would have never voted for Trump. He also notes that the last time things got frisky between our nations, we burnt down the White House.

“It’s not new, Americans looking at Canada. We even had a war in 1812, and we burned the White House,” Chretien told CTV’s Question Period.

“For Mr. Trump, he does not realize if Canada was part of the U.S. a few weeks ago, he would have never become president, because the Canadians would not have voted for him,” Chretien said. “And he would have lost clearly the Congress, because there’s only two or three seats. Canadians are not right-wingers a la Trump. Canadians love our values, they love our mentality. They love the kind of society we have, a much more generous, tolerant society.”

All the smart mouthed Americans talking about giving us freedom, maybe they should consider this – we want the freedom not to be American. If we did, we would have moved there already. Or we would have initiated some sort of union. We’ve had since 1867, and haven’t done so yet.
