We’re not remitting carbon tax to the feds, says SaskEnergy/SaskPower minister

Justin Trudeau may not have taken a “walk in the snow,” like his father did 40 years ago on this day, but Dustin Duncan took a walk in rain in front of Parliament

 

Premier Scott Moe posted on X and other social media the morning of Feb. 29, “40 years ago in Ottawa, Pierre Trudeau took a walk in the snow and decided to step down as Prime Minister. Yesterday in Ottawa, SaskEnergy Minister Dustin Duncan took a walk in the wind and rain and made an important decision about remitting the carbon tax.”

“I’m here in Ottawa, where, 40 years ago, Pierre Trudeau took a walk in the snow and decided to resign as prime minister. Today, I took a walk in the rain, and made an important decision about the carbon tax,” Duncan said in a video recorded beside the Eternal Flame, in front the the Centre Block  and Peace Tower of the Parliament Buildings.

Duncan was in Ottawa for a nuclear power conference.

In the video, Duncan talked about how the federal government’s exclusion of carbon tax on home heating oil in Atlantic Canada was unfair to people in Saskatchewan who largely use natural gas for home heating, and were still being charged a carbon tax. Premier Scott Moe announced late last year that starting Jan. 1, SaskEnergy would no longer be collecting the carbon tax on home heating. But the question remained if, at the end of February when the next remittance to the federal government for the carbon tax was due, if the Saskatchewan government would bite the bullet and take a hit, paying the carbon tax on behalf of the people from provincial government revenues.

It turns out, the answer to that question is ‘no.’

Duncan said,  “So today I’m announcing that, in addition to not collecting the carbon tax on SaskEnergy bills, the Government of Saskatchewan will not be remitting the federal carbon tax on natural gas that Saskatchewan families use to heat their homes.”

As recent legislation the provincial government passed makes the minister essentially responsible for the province’s carbon tax sins, Duncan, as long as he hold that position, is ultimately responsible for any legal repercussions.

To that end, he said, “This is a decision we do not take lightly. And we recognize that it may come with consequences. This is why, in December of last year, the Saskatchewan Legislature unanimously passed a law that gives our government, and me as minister, the exclusive responsibilities for compliance with the federal carbon tax on home heating.

“The Trudeau-NDP carbon tax has been a disaster, driving up the cost of most everything, while doing nothing to reduce emissions. the real solution would be for Trudeau to scrap the carbon tax on everyone, and everything. But until that happens, Saskatchewan families won’t pay the Trudeau carbon tax on their household SaskEnergy bill and the federal government won’t receive those amounts from our government, either.”
