June 5th to 9th, the Petroleum Technology Research Centre will be hosting in Regina the plenary and technical working group meetings of the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) Technical Committee 265. The ISO/TC-265 is made up of experts, scientists, and regulators from 24 different countries working collaboratively to develop global standards for carbon capture, and storage (CCS).

The PTRC was instrumental in establishing this technical committee, and was also directly involved in the creation of the first standards in the world – Canadian-United States CCS standards (CSA-Z741) back in 2012 – which were then used as the initial document for the development on the ISO standards. PTRC remains at the forefront of international standards development, as vice-chair of the Canadian committee, and contributing to the work of the TC-265. Working groups within the TC-265 include CO2 capture, CO2 pipeline transportation, CO2 transport by ships, CO2 geological storage, CO2 storage associated with CO2EOR, and quantification and verification standards for storage projects.

“We are pleased to be organizing this event, which will bring world leading expertise to Regina, where the first standards were developed collaboratively between Canadian and US partners back in 2012,” said PTRC’s CEO Ranjith Narayanasamy in a press release. “We want to showcase for our international guests the pioneering work done on CCS here in Saskatchewan, including our own Aquistore CO2 storage project, SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Capture Facility, and Whitecap’s Weyburn CO2-EOR operations.”

The weeklong event will include visits to those three facilities on June 7th.

But the main goal of the plenary remains the break-out sessions and face-to-face meetings that allow different countries to bring their own unique perspectives and inputs into standards that will help them safely utilize carbon capture and storage to reduce emissions from large set point sources. This is the first plenary meeting, in-person, since 2019.

“Most of the world is interested in what we’ve achieved here in Saskatchewan; we in turn are interested in sharing that knowledge and coming to understand the various challenges that individual countries face in making CCS a part of their 2050 net-zero goals,” said PTRC’s Manager of Operations Matt Nasehi, vice-chair of the Canadian committee.

Sponsors at the event include Government of Canada (NRCan), Government of Saskatchewan (Ministry of Energy and Resources), Whitecap Resources, The Mosaic Company, Enbridge, Tundra Oil and Gas, the International CCS Knowledge Centre, and SaskPower.
