Just before the Sept. 29 Saskatoon press conference where Premier Scott Moe announced his government’s nuclear power generation plans, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck released the following statement by email:

Our team supports nuclear power. It must be part of our future energy mix and is an essential part of our transparent, costed, Grid and Growth plan.

After 20 years of scandal, waste and mismanagement, we know how his government operates — big announcements, big promises and photo ops, ending with delays, budget blowouts and boondoggles. Saskatchewan people deserve to see the full plan, with all the details about how much these reactors will cost, how they will be paid for and what all the potential risks and impacts will be.

Saskatchewan people need to only look at the budget blowout from their catastrophic coal plan, which started at a cost of less than $1 billion and is now estimated to cost $46 billion, and will double power bills — at least.

Every time Scott Moe fails, it’s everyday Saskatchewan people that pay the price.

At the same time, food bank use in Saskatchewan has spiked nearly 13 percent. People are living in tents because there’s nowhere else for them to go, our healthcare system is collapsing and schools are literally falling apart.

While all of this happens, Scott Moe and his buddies are too busy soaring above the crisis they’ve created in luxury jets. His focus remains what it always has been, taking care of the Sask. Party’s friends in high places.

Saskatchewan needs reliable affordable power, and nuclear needs to be part of that future — but we need a government that is transparent and honest about the costs and impacts. It’s time for change.
