Vi Day, recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal
REGINA – Among the 21 doctors, politicians, veterans, police officers and volunteers honoured with the King Charles III Coronation Medal at Government House, Regina, on Sept. 19, Vi Day of Carnduff and Brian Zinchuk of Estevan were two people from Saskatchewan’s energy sector recognized.
Eligible candidates must meet the following national criteria:
- Have made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region or community of Canada, or have made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada, and
- Be alive on 6 May 2023. The award can be made posthumously, as long as the candidate was alive on that date.
During the anniversary year, 30,000 medals will be awarded, of which 4,000 will recognize members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
Investitures have been taking place throughout this year, with a similar investiture taking place the previous week in Saskatoon.

Most of those 30,000 medals are distributed by nominations from Canadian politicians, both at the federal and provincial level, with members of parliament, senators, lieutenant-governors, premiers and MLAs being allotted a certain number of nominees.
A short citation was read for each of the 21 nominees honoured on Sept. 19. For Vi Day, Lt.-Col. Jason Quilliam, Saskatchewan chief of protocol, read, “Vi Day from Carnduff, Saskatchewan. She’s a recipient of the 2022 Southeast Legends Award. Vi has contributed significantly to the oil and gas sector in Saskatchewan for 65 years.”
For Brian Zinchuk, he read, “Brian Zinchuk from Estevan. Saskatchewan, is an award-winning photojournalist that is contributing to journalism to the understanding of oil and gas industry through a unique focus on providing news on Saskatchewan’s energy industry.”
